AI will build the wrong thing faster
It will happily design your business for you, and that is the problem
Here is a thing that did not used to be possible. You sit down to work out your business, what to offer, what to build next, and instead of sitting in the discomfort of not knowing, you ask the machine. Design my offer, plan my next quarter. And it does, in seconds, and it looks good.
Why agonise over the direction for weeks, read three books, hire a strategist, when a competent plan appears in four seconds? So you take it, and you build your whole business around it.
And you build it fast! Because everything is fast now, and the machine makes you feel like an entrepreneur on steroids (or worse…), and months go by, and the business even runs semi-well. But you might feel this discomforting feeling that maybe this is not what you really wanted to build… but here you are. Who decided this? Me? The machine? Why does it feel empty? Logical, but empty.
It just feels like nobody's business because the machine cannot build the specific business you actually want. After all, it does not know what you want, and it will never feel the difference between a business that fits you as a person and your life and one that does not.
It builds the obvious one. And when you are not intentional, when you are lost in the options and relieved to hand the decision over, that obvious one becomes your life.
We make these decisions so quickly these days that we don’t even see it coming. There used to be friction in building the wrong thing!
It was slow and uncomfortable, and somewhere in the slowness you would notice this is not it, and stop. That drag is gone now; you can build a whole business you do not want before the doubt ever catches up with you.
You have been moving your work above the line, and learning to charge for the judgment instead of the output. This is the last move, and the biggest: deciding what to build in the first place, and why this matters to you!
That decision was always yours, and it sits at the very top of the line, the one thing you cannot hand to a tool, because the tool has no stake in whether this is a business you can stand to run for the next ten years, as YOU!
Look at what you have let AI shape most: the offer, the direction.
Ask yourself honestly: did you choose this, or did you accept the clean version it handed you? The one that felt bullet-proof? If you cannot remember deciding, you did not; you simply accepted.
You will not sort that out alone, at the same desk where the tool keeps offering a plausible answer to every hard question. You need people around you who have no interest in the average, who will look at what you are building and ask whether you actually want it, before you give it a year of your life.
